You guys, I don’t know about your parts, but my parts are hot. My parts meaning both of the world and, um, of my bod. My parts are hot. Lana’s parts are hot. I feel like at the conclusion of each nursing session I’m peeling us apart like a sheet of stubborn cling wrap that just is not having it.

Poor little clammy kiddo. We’ve been swaddling her nekkie at night (well, diped up but no jammers) in the lightest little muslin swaddle we’ve got and she’s been getting through it like a champ. Because lemme just put it out there right now: if you straightjacketed me with a burlap sack in a house that routinely remains 80+ degrees well into the evening, I’d be giving you The Stabbiest Look Ever with my eyes. But she just fusses once or twice kinda sleepy like and then gives into slumber like the precious babe she is while I use the nearest burp cloth to mop the sweat from ‘twixt my boobs.

It’s. Fecking. Hot.

Thirty-plus bloggers bringing 30+ excuses to bust out the stripey paper straws and slurp up the last days of summer in spectacular style.

(Side note: IRL paper straws are pretty much the worst idea ever unless you like the second half of your drink to taste like wet newspaper. But…Pinterest, so…)

These Fizzes combine everything I’m attracted to when I see fancy mocktails or infused lemonades on schmancy hipster restaurant menus — muddled herbs! summer berries! ginger anything!! — but would never really shell out $6 to suck down because that’s six mo’ dollaz I could be spending on fried artisan pickles while sipping a perfectly refreshing glass of ice water, thanks very much.

There’s a cool basil element tempered by warm ginger and caramely coconut sugar, plus bright lemon and raspberries and a sparkling topper that just screams SUMMER. Or maybe it actually says it in more of a low, sultry drawl. Summm-uuhhhhh. Blanche Devereaux comes to mind. Yes, I like that better.

Scroll aaaall the way down to get the recipe for these guys — and be sure to take a peek at the rest of the #drinkthesummer lineup at the links below. (Thanks again for hosting, Sherrie + Renee!)

Stay cool out thurr!

p.s. Booze is optional, as always. I’d probably go with gin or vodka, a little or a lot. 😉

raspberry basil gingerade fizz
Prep time
Total time
Makes: 2 servings
  • 10 raspberries, plus extra for garnish
  • 1 tsp freshly grated ginger
  • ¼ cup lemon juice (about 3 lemons)
  • 2-4 T concentrated coconut sugar simple syrup (see note)
  • club soda
  • booze (optional, see note)
  • 4 basil leaves, plus additional for garnish
  • ice
  1. To each of two glasses, add 5 raspberries, ½ tsp grated ginger and 2 basil leaves. Muddle to combine, break up berries and bruise herbs.
  2. Add 1-2 T concentrated coconut sugar simple syrup to each glass (to taste); divide lemon juice between glasses.
  3. Add desired amount of ice and top with club soda. Garnish, if desired. Pop in a stripey straw and go to town!
To make the concentrated coconut sugar simple syrup: combine 2 cups coconut sugar with 1 cup water and simmer until sugar is completely dissolved. Allow to cool before using. Stores in the fridge for several weeks. (And while we're on the topic: I love the unexpected caramel sweetness from the concentrated coconut sugar simple syrup, but feel free to use a standard, white sugar simple syrup in its place if you want a more straightforward "sugar" sweetness -- or a clearer drink. Just adjust the quantity to taste.)

To take this from mocktail to cocktail: add a shot of your fave clear booze (I'd probably go the vodka route...) before topping with club soda. Enjoy!

Umm, YUM. in lieu of coconut stuff, I think I could pull off the maple syrup, which is off-the-shelf from VT and ready to fizz! Keep it cool, cling-wrap baby mama!

Thanks Alice! It’s pretty dang refreshing! (You can probably make it at work out of stuff in the Goog kitchen!)

It is super hot… so this boozy bash came at the perfect time. I made my cocktails and then made extra so I could down some while photographing… 😛 This looks gorgeous and delicious!

    1. Em

A girl after my own heart, Betty. I most definitely gulped these down just as soon as I set down the camera!

  5. Lily | Kale & Caramel

Girrrrrl, you crack me up! AND HOLY CRAPBALLS POOR LITTLE LANA STRAIGHTJACKETED IN 100º WEATHER. Sounds like you’re doing all the right things, including whipping up as many of these gorgeous babies as humanly possible. Which is what I need to go do right now. YUMYUMYUM.

    1. Em

I feel like what I should probably be doing is just dunking Lana straight into these things. Just…raspberry-basil-lemon all up ons everything. It’s not child abuse if it’s basically a spa treatment, right? (I kid. Kinda.)

  6. Brooke @ Chocolate + Marrow

I feel your pain, lady! This unusual west coast heat is killllllingggg me!!! Let’s just say if I lived near you, I’d be asking to borrow a few burp towels myself. Ew, but also, LOL.

These fizzies are just perfect, Em! Glad you found a tasty way to cool down 🙂

    1. Em

Do you need a care package of burp cloths, Brooke? Comin’ right up! No shame in keepin’ them puppies sweat-free (or at least as sweat-free as can be…) Stay cool up there!!

    1. Em

Thanks Kelsey! And who doesn’t love a boozy modification? 😉 Even for this nursing mama, it’s all in the timing! 😉

    1. Em

Thanks Grace! Fall is lovely, but I’ll even take a lighter application of summer at this point. Fortunately it’s cooling down so things are less…sticky…today. Let’s hope it holds out! 🙂

  7. Erika

So the above is maybe the best description of summer heat affliction that I’ve ever read. Also I love your usage of “twixt.” And I SO feel you on the $6 that could be shelled out on fried pickles (insert tator tots/nachos/fried things of any kind) instead of those schmancy dranks. This looks sooooooo delicious; can’t wait to try it out when I’m back in even fecking hotter Houston!! 😉

    1. Em

OMG tater tots would SO get my $6 over a mocktail, Erika. And I don’t envy the heat in Houston — heat + humidity = an exceptionally crankypants me. (That feeling like you just walked into a bathroom after someone showered but, um, you’re outside. ICK.) Hang in there!

A cute bebe does indeed. And she’s even kinda cuter when she’s all overheated and rosy-cheeked. Heh.

  8. Sherrie

I’m loving these colors, and brightness, and flaves happening. Can I put VODKA in mine? Great! Love this, love you, sending all the cool vibes to you and little Lana James. Thanks for hanging with us yesterday, #DRINKTHESUMMER, xx!

  9. Jessie Snyder | Faring Well

OMG you crack me up. Sorry for you and your babes being so hot! Certainly a few sips of this stellar drink and you’ll feel a bit cooler :). I love how this collab got us all together so I could discover you! Big hugs (from a distance, cause, you know, we’re sweaty) and hi from CO! <3

This post was so, so funny. Literally laughing out loud over here! I would be giving WAY more than stabbie-eyes! Your voice and writing are so captivating, not to mention the PHOTOS! I have been stalking all of you #drinkthesummer bloggers and I just made it down the list enough to find you! Yay for me.
