Honey-Lime Watermelon Floats

Honey-Lime Watermelon Floats recipe (via the pigandquill.com) #icecream #dessert #summer

It’s October. Or as Lana has taken to saying, “it’s almost Halloweeeeeeeen tiiiiiiiiime!” (Followed, always, by “the scary guys are just pretend, Mom. The scary guys are just pretend.” Thank you, sweet babe.) So here we are, officially entering into that love/hate time of year where, for procrastinators like me, shit either happens RIGHTTHISMINUTE or gets nudged happily into “early Q1 // happy face // talk soon!,” which would almost explain why I’m pushing a fruity summer float when pumpkins should be springing outta my bum. But as much as this post is, indeed, about my procrastination (as in, I first made these guys in…August, I think? though we’ve been drinking them far too often since…), it’s also a belated celebration of sorts for this blog that turned five years old exactly one month ago, right under my nose and with very little fanfare. And for the month of October, itself, which will appropriately mark the year anniversary of my diagnosis while serving as a well-marketed reminder to buy yogurt with pink lids, check your boobies — and, more than anything, trust your gut. (I cannot emphasize this enough. I was so very fortunate to have a doctor who immediately referred me … Read More

toasted walnut enchilada hummus with cilantro + lime

Two recipes in one: toasty, nutty hummus drizzled with a fast and foolproof spicy sauce. Super addicting! Full recipe at www.thepigandquill.com. #vegan #superbowl #snacks #recipe

Oh yay! You guys are still here. Meaning my affinity for hot dogs (and a decidedly Americasian interpretation, at that) didn’t scare you away. I knew you could hang. As your reward, this week we’re talking more Superbowl-ready eats that are borderline goofy (enchilada sauce on toppa hummus? she dun lost her shit!) but silly delicious all the same. You’ll see what I mean when we get into the nitty gritty later on. And really, is it even that weird? It’s clearly not bizarre enough to warrant the gibberish I keep slapping in between all these parentheses (like this crap — which is here solely for the purpose of example), but I feel a little insecure every time I post something that’s not, like, THE Trending Item on Pinterest. (Side note: until I dunk an Oreo in waffle batter and drizzle it with peanut butter, I’m not sure I’ll ever be That Trending Item.) (Side side note: I would so eat that.) You want to lob a boomerang at my head right now, don’t you? (It would be kind of poetic and all given its parenthesis-y shape…) I’m stopping. So, late last week, I went into the lab for glucose testing, which is … Read More

Summer Street Corn Two Ways (gluten-free)

Ok guys. Here it is: the post (or rather, posts) that’s officially gonna take your “waaaaaah it’s already August, Poopiecakes McBacktoschool” and turn it into “it’s peak sweet corn season beeeyahs, mah summer’s juuuuuuust getting started!!” Because a summer without corn is just pool hair and ReddiWip. Ear cuffs and Dippin’ Dots. Rollerblades and boy bands. Oh, sorry, thought we were listing our fave childhood shit. Are you still there? The shameful thing is that corn actually isn’t all that commonplace in our house, even when it’s at the peak of candy-sweet, 10-for-a-dolla awesomeness. The simplest explanation would be that Chris is so neutral on corn that it breaks my heart a little each time he fails to give it even a passing glance. But really, it’s because corn in our house turns into, without fail, all the corn in my belly. Ever. Like six ears in one sitting and then it’s at least half an hour of “baaaaaaaaaaabe whydyoulemmeeatsomuch cooooooooooooooooooorn.” And then some corny bathroom comment, because together Chris and I have a combined age of, like, 11. This season, though, I was lucky enough to find corn in our crisper more than once, and after seeing vendor upon vendor … Read More

Pineapple-Mint Coconut Water Frappé (vegan, paleoish)

This morning I woke up with sunshine practically pouring out of ears, my heart lighter ‘an air and a serious spring in my step. It’s summer, you guys. Not almost summer or might as well be summer but the real thing. Warm. Glorious. And my day planner Google Cal is finally awash with long, sleepy weekends, fancy pants dinners and aeroplane travel to places near and far. Columbus, Las Vegas, Puerto Vallarta. Tahoe, Mammoth — and, if I can swing it, maybe even a late summer roadtrip through the Pacific Northwest. It’s a lot in a little time, and before I know it, I’ll probably be one big ball of whiney woeisme, but for now I’m just gonna go ahead and bask in the glow that is a proper summer vacation. And drink me a drink that is unapologetically literal in its celebration of the season. (Because it’s sunny yellow. Poetic, right?) Growing up in Sacramento, summer was sticky forearms on the counter at Vic’s Ice Cream. Long drips of mint chip, the sharp, puckery fizz of a lime ricky. Tall cups of pineapple sherbet passed across the counter — sweet, frothy and impossibly cold. Blissful on a hot day, for sure. But … Read More

Strawberry-Lime (Coconut) Agua Fresca

It’s my birthday week around these parts — and who’s got two thumbs and loves herself a birthday cocktail? THIS GIRL. Sadly, the only booze we’ve got in the house at the moment is brown, and unless there’s a good glug of ginger beer involved (or bacon and dates) (or ice cream and fruit) (or peer pressure and prayer), I’m not big on the brown. I know. I’m a huge disappointment. What kind of foodie takes issue with whiskey? Maybe the kind that turns FUCHSIA in the face at first sip. We’re talking the shadowself of every blemish I’ve ever had, incarnate. On mah face. But who knows, maybe I’ll grow out of it this year, ya think? That’d be worth a whispered wish across a flaming field of birthday candles. So. Until then. Did someone say mocktails? I am a huge sucker for strawberry sippables. Strawberry Quik? Ismyjaaaaaaam. So much so that I made a pie out of the stuff. Well, not the actual stuff. But Quik-like stuff. A frozen pie. With a cereal crust. Yeah. ‘Member that? It was a fun time. I’m also pretty partial to the cool, hydrating bevvies known as agua fresca(s). Particularly when they’re heavy on the fruit and the agua is of … Read More

Jalapeño Watermelon Agua Fresca – a drinko for Cinco

UPDATE: This contest is now closed. Thanks to all who entered! Have you entered to win that Q Squared NYC Breakfast in Bed serveware set in our Luv Yo Momma Giveaway? Seriously? Get onnnnnnnn it! 🙂 Is it summer yet? My Vitamix thinks so. It’s been running all morning blending up tasty drinks that just scream SUMMMMMMMMER. (See the caps there? Screaming. Also, yeah, drinks, as in expect to see a few more of these around the piggity blog sooooon…) I thought I’d lay this first one on you just in time for Cinco, since it seems festive and party-like and agua fresca sounds good rolling off the tongue. Well, maybe it sounds better rolling off of Salma Hayek’s tongue, but I think you know what I mean. And if your tongue is anything like Salma’s, well, someone’s ears are lucky. uh. But for realsies. This agua fresca is some flippin’ FRESH. ASS. WATER. YO. And yeah, I realize how that reads. I’m just gonna keep on typing forward because it’s about a thousand times more satisfying than backing over ass water. It’s summer, after all. Ain’t nobody got time for regrets. Embrace the present! Live in the now! Buy sixteen new Target … Read More

Roasted Cauliflower Street Tacos (gf w/ vegan option)

Do you guys do the Taco Tuesday thing around your digs? We never really intend to, but for the last couple of weeks it’s just kinda worked out. It’s like some otherworldy being (I’d like to think it’s Alf) just really wants us to be stuffing our faces with stuffed foods. A taco is a stuffed food, right? I wonder if I say stuffed foods enough times how it’ll affect my Google rankings. I’d like nothing more than for some poor schmuck searching for Hot Pockets to get tricked into finding these balls-good tacos instead because of — whoops — stuffed foods. Side note: if you’re the poor schmuck I’m referring to, let me clarify: I love that you’re here. I don’t not love Hot Pockets. As in, I kinda like them. I want that to be past-tense, but they taste like hugging college. In a good way. Although, admittedly, these tacos are much better. Please be my friend. Moving right along. ‘Member the other day when we made Cauli Steaks for Gina and I mentioned that I end up with only, like, three cauliflower steaks and a HEAP of random florets? We’re gonna put that heap to good work here, you guys. So … Read More

Garlicky Curried Noodle Soup (gf w/ vegan option) – and a Q Squared gig!

When I posted this guy on Instagram the other day, I had the forethought to actually add a squidge of sriracha to the egg. And it looked bangarang, you guys. Bang. Uh. Rang. And then I sat down to edit the pics for this post and realized that, amidst all the excitement of pulling out the big ol’ Nikon and strapping it to the tripod and F-stopping like whoa, I never actually took a real-deal pic of the sauce’d egg. What the eff. I blame #yolkporn. Gets me every time. (Ok, side note: that rocker Caleb dude is singing a Gaga song at half-tempo on Idol right now, and I’m just not feeling it. But the judges, hello, are so endearing it almost makes up for it. Harry, you keep up that Keith Urban impression and I just might forgive your last Christmas album. Also, Hope Floats = yes. That’s it.) So this soup: sriracha drizzle or not, it’s kinda fine, am I right? Like, girl, you a dime. Straight-up Good Looking. And happily, it’s just as tasty. There are 15 flavor-full ingredients in the broth, alone — but don’t let that scare you! If you do a moderate amount of … Read More

Guest Postin’ and Avocado Toastin’

Still on the road squeezin’ babies in MN this week, so my cousin Joel (remember him?) is kindly providing a sassy post in my place this weekend. Go figure he’d write up one of the trendiest items in the foodie and food blogger scene. Dang kids are just so ON IT these days. I can’t keep up, dadgummit. Anyway, enjoy — and see you all soon! —————————————————————————————————————– Hey all, it’s another guest post!  Em’s outta town for the week, so you’re stuck with me: Em’s younger, infinitely less cool cousin, Joel. [Editor’s note: pshaw right.] Since I’m pretty unimaginative (read as: lazy), she had to give me a couple prompts to get me started on this.  They ranged from creating original recipes, to traveling for food, to profiling my fave food bloggers.  And since my generation is notoriously indecisive, I’m doing a crazy scattered combo of those three! Last month I took a trip to LA to couch surf, chill out, catch up with college friends, and consume as much food as humanly possible.  I came back 5 lbs. heavier, $300 poorer, and with a newfound appreciation for avocado toast (among other foods).  While I’ve eaten avocado before, and I’ve … Read More
