Can we talk a minute about things I’m feeling these days? One: Pistachios. I bought this huge bag of them in the shell because we have these friends that always put out pistachios when we go to their house for dinner, and it’s super fun because it’s, like, both a snack and an activity and something to do with your hands when you’re not quite ready for that second pre-dinner beer — except for I’m currently in my own house on my zero-th beer trying to write this blog post and snack at the same time and all I want is to be able to slam handfuls of pistachios into my face between paragraphs but THE FREAKING SHELLS ARE IN THE WAY and who has time for activity-snack hybrids anyway what was I thinking omfg. Seriously though. If someone wants to come over here and feed me shelled pistachios, I’d be ever so grateful. I’ll pay you one-thousand pistachio shells, which just may be the current form of currency in the year 2097 when this tangent is done. Two: Lana + vintage duds = I’m dead. Feelsie-feels times a million. Tres — currrrrrrry! I’m aboust it, you guys. Of late I’ve been puttin’ … Read More

charbroiled lemongrass chicken + tamago banh mi tacos with five spice mayo

lemongrass chicken + tamago banh mi tacos with five spice mayo (via thepigandquill.com) #tacos #asian #recipe

Gonna keep things simple today because we’re off to spend a long weekend with ye’ old granfolksies and homie needs to pack up all the shit that apparently is required for a 13-lb human to function. Oh, ok — to function in style. But it’s a lot of shit, you guys. And that’s not even counting the actual, um, shit. Which is surprisingly unshitty. Wow, really getting you revved up for tacos, aren’t I? Rewind. It’s no secret I love tacos. Or even, specifically, fusion tacos. It’s also no secret I love banh mi. As Joey Tribbiani wold say, put your hands together. Voilà. (You thought I was done, huh?) These little gems are so stinkin’ good — and my favorite part might be that the chicken is broiled until all the little dark meat nubbies are blackened and charred and rocking that kinda faux charbroiled flavor you get from a Burger King patty — except not at all like that and one hunny pecent legit. (Here’s where I admit that I really do kinda like that sneaky fast food charred flavor. Like, a Whopper Jr. with all that grilly goodness and a solid attempt at crisp, cold lettuce? I almost wouldn’t say no to that … Read More

spicy caramelized spam + scallion pasta

spicy caramelized spam + scallion pasta recipe via thepigandquill.com | #pasta #dinner #recipe #summer

You know those foods you can’t help but eat on repeat? Those (often pantry-based) dishes that you come back to again and again, even when the fridge is freshly stocked and the cooler weather is begging you to finally crank the oven and get creative? If you know me, you know I’m talking hot dog sammiches, breakfast for dinner, stick-to-your ribs soup. Yes, soup. Even in the summer I can’t get enough. And this pasta. You guysssss, I can’t oversell this pasta enough — and trust me, I’m about to try. It’s fast, simple and positively addictive. Topped generously with furikake, it’s like musubi married pasta. Married corned beef hash. I LOVE CORNED BEEF HASH. But, like, the glorious, should-be-reserved-for-camping canned kind that you can get all super crispy on the edges. Did I lose you? Are you like, gerl, corned beef hash is not at all where it’s at. If you are, I’ma bet you’re also like, gerl, spam is for email filters, not mah mouf! To which I say: you’re wrong. And then I beg of you: let this pasta change your mind. Just…just trust me. This one time. Because crumbly browned bits is why. Because caramelized. Because it’s spam that’s … Read More

spicy pastrami reuben mac n’ cheese

spicy pastrami reuben mac n' cheese | via thepigandquill.com

Just a quick one today because it’s too beautiful outside not to get the to-do list tuh-dun so the behbes and I can take a walk in the sunshine. I’m strongly contemplating taking along the stroller (we got one! this one! with these wheels!), just to see how it rolls, but then I’d just be that crazy pregnant lady walking her phantom child attempting to talk-text via Siri instead of just that crazy pregnant lady attempting to talk-text via Siri because that’s more normal. But seriously, walking and texting — like finger-slash-thumb-texting — is kinda dangerous in a neighborhood of slim-to-no sidewalks, so crazy is maybe sane in this instance. Eh, ehhhhhhh? Just saying. Also, I’m 97% sure speaking things aloud like “Siri, text Chris: going for a walk period maybe it’ll make me poop exclamation mark” is totallllly socially acceptable. WHO ARE YOU LOOKING AT, LADY WALKING YOUR CAT. I’m with child. What’s your story? I don’t blame you if you’ve stopped reading at this point. This reuben mac n’ cheese, guys, is so, SOOOOOO good. It’s even Chris-approved — and he’s ordinarily a Blue Box Traditionalist, so that’s saying a lot. It’s got everything there is to love about … Read More

greek sweet potato fries with curried tzatziki

Just a shortie today because I’ve got roughly three weeks of freezer meals calling out to be labeled and organized and tetris’d into a spot that was previously occupied by six frozen ‘naners. Which have now become two ginormous loaves of pineapple-banana loaf cake, also headed for the freezer. Systems are failing. (PS – Do you guys have any interest in the whole freezer food game plan? Mehbeh I’ll do a little posty-post about how it’s all coming together and then a Part Deux when it all gets cooked up for countless post-baby dins and inevitably falls miserably apart. Is that completely, totally boring? Comtotesboringo? Snoresville? Lemme know.) This past weekend Chris and I had a small non-shower at the corner bar chock fulla beers and burgers and chicken strips and cuppycakes and exactly zero games and it was awesome. We’re so lucky to be surrounded by friends that have truly become our second family — and as only children, it’s so comforting to know that our little babes will grow up with more honorary aunties and uncles than she can count. (Well I mean, when she can count, she’ll be able to count them, but I’ma keep things low-presh…) In addition … Read More

cantina laredo carne asada nachos

Crunchy baked chips, super addicting carne asada and all the fixins'! (via thepigandquill.com)

Nothing like bouncing back from a vegan chili post with a few slabbies of medium rare bovine, amirite? It’s part of this whole living on the edge thing Chris and I have going on. Just a couple of real risk-takers alternating bites of bean curd and meat. Somebody get me a parachute. Actually, somebody get me a fresh thinking cap, because my brain has been particularly sputtery this past week and I’m a liiiittle afeared for you all. I even went so far as to look up Use Of Words Such As ‘Afeared’ in the symptoms index of my baby book, and scribbled over the original text was a crude drawing of a spherical woman holding a cow over her head, fangs bared, while her friends ran away. This is what I get for cheaping out and buying my references used on Amazon, you guys. The world is full of freaking weirdos, and I can only do so much to warn you away from them. Uh, are you…still…there? Better to just talk about deez nachos, den, I suppose. Look at all dem layers! Ok, but really, I’m done subbing th’s for d’s. Cuz dat’s annoying. Ha…rrrrro? For those of you … Read More

slow cooker vegan mole chili

Slow Cooker Vegan Mole Chili Recipe -- just 25 mins prep (via thepigandquill.com) #vegan #recipe #glutenfree #chili #crockpot

Let me tell you what I did this weekend. I pushed around strollers for three hours and then ate a sandwich the size of my face. I mean, we also did the Valentine’s Day thing and all that jazz (panna cotta for all!), but sandwich the size of my face was pretty much the highlight. And in case you’re wondering, we are no closer to choosing a stroller than we were before. Namely because there’s apparently no such thing as chic and multipurpose and affordable and joggable and schlep-all-your-shittable without tipping over and knocking your newborn in the dome. I’m about THIS close to just poaching a cart from the Target parking lot and calling it a day. And now I’m done talking about baby stuffs. For this post, at least. Because I feel like there are maybe three reactions to these kinds of rants, and they’re either: Current Parents: Suck it up, porkchop. Hip Young Singles or Not-Yet-Even-Trying-To-Be-Parents: SNORE TIMES A MILLION. My Mom: Tell me everything. Since most of you probably aren’t my mom (hi mom! are you reading this on your new smart phone? proudsies!), I’ll try to rein it in. No promises, though, because babies babies everywhere and not … Read More

toasted walnut enchilada hummus with cilantro + lime

Two recipes in one: toasty, nutty hummus drizzled with a fast and foolproof spicy sauce. Super addicting! Full recipe at www.thepigandquill.com. #vegan #superbowl #snacks #recipe

Oh yay! You guys are still here. Meaning my affinity for hot dogs (and a decidedly Americasian interpretation, at that) didn’t scare you away. I knew you could hang. As your reward, this week we’re talking more Superbowl-ready eats that are borderline goofy (enchilada sauce on toppa hummus? she dun lost her shit!) but silly delicious all the same. You’ll see what I mean when we get into the nitty gritty later on. And really, is it even that weird? It’s clearly not bizarre enough to warrant the gibberish I keep slapping in between all these parentheses (like this crap — which is here solely for the purpose of example), but I feel a little insecure every time I post something that’s not, like, THE Trending Item on Pinterest. (Side note: until I dunk an Oreo in waffle batter and drizzle it with peanut butter, I’m not sure I’ll ever be That Trending Item.) (Side side note: I would so eat that.) You want to lob a boomerang at my head right now, don’t you? (It would be kind of poetic and all given its parenthesis-y shape…) I’m stopping. So, late last week, I went into the lab for glucose testing, which is … Read More

five spice + curried sweet corn soup

A warm and cozy winter soup with a hint of spring. #Glutenfree with #vegan mods. Find the full recipe at www.thepigandquill.com.

Two years ago I gave up soda and factory farmed fast-food for the New Year, and they both stuck. Aside from hippie, home-brewed ginger beer and the like, nary a pop has crossed these lips. Nor a Double Double (thank god for In n’ Out’s grilled cheese is all I have to say about that…). Or a chicken nugget. Okokok, there may have been a little c-nug situation this one time at the Denver Airport because cravings and short layovers and crippled self-control, but I sweaaaars to you, that was it. I also swear I’m not (nor was I ever) really much of a fast food junkie, but once it’s off the table, it suddenly seems so forbidden and risky and deliciously alluuuuuuuring. Thank god for In n’ Out’s grilled cheese is all I have to say about that. Since it seems unlikely that I’ll ever be able to stick to another resolution with that same discipline and finesse (except for that one time at the Denver airport. Thank god for In n’ Out’s grilled cheese is all I have to say about that!), I’m saying to hell with new resolutions and hello to my always faithful friend moderation. Ah, moderation. She’s a … Read More

(party-perfect!) deviled cheese crisps + farewell 2014

Super simple cheese crisps made with crisped rice cereal!! Great for cheese plates or party trays. Full recipe at www.thepigandquill.com. #partyfood #NYE #recipe #cheese #snacks

Crumbly. Spicy. Almost-shortbready-but-they’re-made-with-rice-crispies-whaaaaaaa…CHEESE CRISPS!!!!! Yes. But first. There’s but a single day left in 2014 (or two? do I count today?) and I’m trapped somewhere between having too many words to share and not a clue what to write. Which, if you blog or journal or have even ever tried to write a particularly clever email to your boss, is something you’ve all experienced. (Side note: that clever email thing = really hard to pull off. And not for lack of trying, trust me…) Generic as it may sound, 2014 was a year of substantial changes in our little abode. There was the work stuff — like how, at the tail end of 2013, Chris bade farewell to a job he loved (the job, in fact, that brought us back to California, for which we’ll always be grateful) and stepped into an exciting new role that has kept his bright and boundless engineering mind alight with happy challenges. And then this spring, I left my job in marketing — and the second family that went along with it — to explore more personal passions, both here on the blog with all of you (one of my sincerest joys!) and beyond. I never officially … Read More
