Thank you so kindly for the dramatic outpouring of support I received here and across social media following my last post. While I’ve been a bit delinquent about responding to comments and messages, it’s only because your generous gestures have left me without adequate words. ♥ I’ve thought a lot over the past few weeks about how to start this blog post. In the wake of my last post, I’ve experienced no shortage of heart-warming gestures of love, support and generosity, any of which would make a fine anecdote with which to kick off this recipe for wintry spice cake. If you fancy yourself a writer (as I sometimes dare to), you may relate to the giddy elation that occurs when, mid-shampoo, words you’ve been struggling with begin to rise from within — coaxed forth by the similarly rising steam, or perhaps the safe anonymity of the fogged-over mirrors — only to find they’ve retreated when you finally make time to put pen to paper (finger to keyboard) too many long moments later. It’s not that I intended to go this long without checking in, but after the first few false starts, it started to feel a little forced. So today. Tonight. Without poetry or … Read More

vietnamese shaking beef with gingered sweet potatoes + a giveaway!

Vietnamese Shaking Beef with Gingered Sweet Potatoes recipe (via thepigandquill.com) // #grainfree #paleo

In case you didn’t notice, it’s almost the holidays. I swear just yesterday I was sitting on a wintry beach in Maui shoving my little Lana-belly full of fish tacos and shave ice and now she’s here chilling with us on the outside cutting her Third Freaking Tooth and outgrowing her footie PJs like she’s getting paid for it. WHAT. THE. HEDDLE. I don’t know about you guys, but when the holidays are this close in sight, I become decidedly torn about what and how to eat. On the one hand, it’s only too easy to daydream about things like chestnutty stuffing and potatoes and PIE. But at the same time, knowing those things are in my future, I find myself unnaturally drawn to cleaner, healthier foods that boast big, vibrant flavors. I crave them now — before the holidaying really gets going — and, more predictably, I’ll crave them later, once I’ve gorged myself into a carby, beige oblivion. Today, I’m super excited because, in addition to sharing a recipe that totally fits the bill when it comes to that whole clean(er) eating concept, I’m also giving you guys the opportunity to win a free organic meal delivery from Sun Basket that makes pulling … Read More

buttered miso-tomato soup with roasted garlic + togarashi (gf)

Buttered Miso-Tomato Soup with Roasted Garlic + Togarashi via thepigandquill.com

Do you guys know Sylvie from Gourmande in the Kitchen? I’m so honored to be pinch-hitting for her today so she can get some well-deserved R&R on the sunny beaches of Maui. I’m more than a little envious. It’s hardly been three months since we babymooned on that very island and I already miss the jungly black sand beaches. The unmarred white sand beaches. The mochiko chicken. YOU GUYS. The mochiko chicken. Happily, I’ve got something comin’ round the bend that’ll hopefully take the edge offa that craving, but we’ll save that for another post. Today, we’re talking about scratching a different itch — one that originated after I slurped some of the most unique ramen I’ve ever sampled: tender, toothsome noodles swimming in a buttery miso broth infused with, of all things, bright tomatoes, garlic and parm. Yup, like, the cheese parm. And get this: it was suuuuuuurrrrr guuuuurrrrrrd. So this soup pays, in at least a smallish way, homage to that super decadent, velvety marriage of tomatoes and miso, rounded out with lots of sweet, nutty garlic. It’s even finished with a pat of Kerrygold, because apparently I take things like buttery broth pretty literally. (Also: buttah makes everything bettah.) Oh … Read More

“his n’ hers” panna cotta (coconut cream w/ cinnamon-bourbon whip + strawberry-sesame w/ matcha whip)

Two easy, perfectly romantic panna cotta recipes - Coconut Cream + Cinnamon-Bourbon Whip and Strawberry Sesame + Matcha Whip. Just 20 mins prep + chilling. Full recipes at www.thepigandquill.com. #recipe #sweets #valentinesday #dairyfree

Let’s talk about how I just spent almost half an hour trying to pinpoint the crackling sound coming from the freezer only to realize it’s coming from a wood-wick candle I left burning on the bathroom counter. And now my kitchen is littered with frozen food and I get to play my favorite-ever freezer game “hide the banana(s).” Except it’s not nearly as fun or dirty as it sounds and more like I really, really need to make banana bread some time in 2015. Yikes. A. Bee. Now (Bachelor spoiler) let’s talk about how Farmbeezy Chreezy almost totally redeemed himself this week by ditching not one but TWO girls in the Badlands and then flying away in a helicopter all double-oh-seveny!!! Those girls, though. Kelsey, though. How likely is it that she’s gonna pull a real life Gone Girl on some poor dude? I feel like VERY LIKELY is the only answer. She got that special kind of Calculated Crazy going on that you just don’t fuck around with. Super scary. Ok, now let’s talk about panna cotta. It might seem like kind of a goofy stretch to jump from The Bachelor to Valentine’s Day, but real life, Chris and I watch The Bachelor together every week, … Read More

grain-free mini persimmon spice cakes (+ eggnog parfaits)

Two recipes in one! Perfect little giftable cakes and festive parfaits perfect for the holidays. Full recipe at www.thepigandquill.com. #grainfree #holidays #recipe #baking #christmas #newyears #eggnog

It’s Christmas Eve! Around here, that means prepping for the in-laws’ annual tamale feast and perhaps the most competitive pirate’s gift exchange that ever was. Our particular version features plenty of red wine and tequila and a particularly obscene vase that makes a comeback every year. It’s a raucous good time and one of those small things I know we’ll enjoy savoring in its current glory before things like an unfortunate floral receptacle that seriously resembles a vagina and nothing else takes a backseat to our inevitably lovely little piglet. How well do you feel like you know my family right know? I’m just going to jump right into persimmons. Is it persimmon season where you are? (Super graceful.) We’re getting to the end of it here, but for the last few years, without fail, I’ve come home from Thanksgiving at my grandparent’s house with at least one hulking sack of hazy, fiery-hued Fuyus. For those unfamiliar with the persimmon family tree, those are the little flat guys that can be eaten while crisp, like an apple. I prefer them drastically to the more teardrop-shaped Hachiya that are eaten once the flesh becomes soft and almost custardy. They sound intriguing and even quite … Read More

spicy pineapple + parsley salad with avocado + chilies

spicy pineapple salad with avocado and chilies | the pig & quill

Greetings from Boston, friends! I just flew in from California and BOY are my arms tired. Is that still a thing? Seriously though, I’m but five hours off the plane and I can already admit to suffering from some serious jetlag. Except, it’s the kind of jetlag that hits you before you swap time zones. Before you boarded the plane. Alrite alrite, before you even checked for the third time that, yes, you packed your charger and yes, the garage door is closed – and wait, should I bring a scarf for the plane? you know how cold I get — aaaaand it’s time to get to the airport already. So basically not at all jetlag and all the way a case of chronic distraction that somehow allowed me to completely space the fact that the internet is abuzz with witches’ brews and finger-shaped treats (sidebar: ew) and peeled grapey things that can only mean it’s Halloween week. So while I should probably be posting Halloweeny (heh, weenie) treats to quell those sweet teeth of yours, instead I give you salad. Cue the violins…  But thassokaaayyyouguyssssss! I have a feeling you’ll forgive me. Because pretty. *eyelash-batting emoji* See see see???? … Read More

parmesan-ricotta spaghetti squash fritters with crispy fried sage

When we lived in San Luis Obispo — that is, a near lifetime ago, full of workdays ending at 4pm, leisurely evening bike rides and long morning strolls through the quaintest of downtowns (remind me why we left again?) — one of our favorite lazy Saturdays was a drive through the hills of south county, taking the seemingly less-traveled backroads past horse farms and vineyards, through sun-shattered corridors of black oaks, all the way to Pismo Beach. Ok, full disclosure: it’s maybe a 20-minute drive, but as the saying goes, distance — or maybe just time — makes the heart grow fonder, and the nostalgic poet within is apparently wholly smitten with every detail of those carefree jaunts, efficient as they may have been. We’d pass the time at Pismo with a nap on the sand, bread bowls of briny chowder thicker than sausage gravy — and too many instances of me charging down the pier, attempting to sneak up on seagulls and instead reeling with fear when they’d boldly stand their ground. Because apparently I was (um, am?) a hyperactive 9-year-old. At dinner, we’d forego the trendier Pismo dining scene for the comfort of Rosa’s, a homey enclave of heirloom Italian recipes, … Read More

Chile-Lime Watermelon Paletas (vegan + paleoish/gf)

A couple weekends ago, Chris and I were holed up in a Truckee hotel for a night during one of his mountain bike races. He was in the bathroom tending to one of his “it’s cool, I think a butterfly bandage should hold it together” injuries (ew) while I distracted myself with Food Network in the bedroom. Because that’s what married people do in swanky euro-mod hotel rooms. First aid and cable. Anyway. Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives was on, of course (is it not always?), and exclamations like BANGARANG and BOOYAH and TAKE ME TO FLAVORTOWN were shooting out of the TV like Cyclop’s laser beams. HOLY CLAM, BATMAN.* GIVE THAT BAD BOY A TASTE. And that’s when it hit me. Blind people probably think Guy Fieri is a porn star. I mean. Is that an OK thing to have people believe? I don’t think so. I think not at all is that OK. So, Public Service Announcement: Guy Fieri is the host of a food show. Tell your blind friends. Moving on. Bangarang-Booyah-Flavortown-Paletas!!!!!!!!! In case you were wondering, I’m in 100% denial that summer is anywhere near over. I’m getting watermelons on the weekly from my CSA, tomatoes are … Read More

Sinless Superfood Devil’s Food Donuts + a Sambazon Giveaway — #SoLetsPigOut

I’ve learned the key to time travel. It’s called get busy, stay busy and maybe stress-eat half a key lime pie. Also, suggest a blog collaboration that runs a whole week long right in the middle of summer. The hours will just drop right away, all Heart of the Ocean style. Just “oop” and it’s Thursday. That’s some magick-with-a-“k” stuff right there. If you’re not picking up what I’m putting down, the last three days of #SoLetsPigOut have been a blur. We’ve got THREE giveaways going, and yesterday I forced a Mad Men reference right onto your Grilled Thai Beef Salad. Things are getting batty. (Check out all the #SoLetsPigOut recipes and giveaways HERE.) And, you guys, the best is still yet to come, because tomorrow 25 blogger friends are coming over for a virtual potluck that’s gonna melt the internet’s face off. And today we’re talking donuts. Yay! I should probably acknowledge that I think the name for these donuts sounds downright dumb. Superfood Devil’s Food? How many foods can you have in a donut before it starts sounding poetically challenged? I think one, but I’m gonna go ahead and own the food-food thing. Because accuracy, ok? Check it, these donuts are everything … Read More

Clementine Cake (gluten-free, grain-free, paleo) — and a birthday for momma

Love cake? Check out last week’s recipe and enter for your chance to win a DIY Calligraphy Set from The Lettered Bride! Gogogo!  Does it, at this point, go without saying that I’m a momma’s girl? I am, through and through. And a better person for it, I truly believe. There is so much of my mom in me, much to the chagrin of my teenage self, who took only too much pleasure in referring to my mom as a textbook AAM — Angry Asian Mother. My best friend, Miriam, and I coined this term, feeling then that the angrily exhaled sighs of disappointment, underbreath muttering and weekslong periods of restriction (a more enlightened form of grounding) were undeserved, mean-spirited, or at the very least, annoyingly cliché displays of Classic Chinese Parenting via Passive Aggression. We, self-absorbed and overconfident in our abilities to deceive, never stopped to consider how our actions may have factored into such parenting. Skipping school and dating older boys behind their backs. Sneaking out of second story windows — only to sit bored at the end of the cul-de-sac, nervously aware of every pair of headlights bouncing over the speed humps at the end of the block. We … Read More
