Cheesy Corn + Scallion Cakes (with Maple’d Greek Yogurt)

Cheesy Corn + Scallion Cakes with Maple Yogurt recipe (via thepigandquill.com) #breakfast #brunch #toddlerfood

This weekend was a reminder of a lot of things. That the Bay Area isn’t exempt from the effects of climate change. That Chris and I have about the most generous and supportive parents that exist outside of the Hallmark Channel. That Lana is at such an enjoyable age, despite the seven times a day she basically tells me to STFU. On Friday, my in-laws and I scooped up the bug and took her to the beach (where the water was still characteristically ice-cold despite the 90-degree temps), and suddenly this little girl emerged before my eyes, all legs and sandy bottom and wispy mullet. She is so unbaby-like these days that part of her bedtime routine is to pretend to be a baby, in which she “cries” for momma, asks for milk (water) and tells us she needs a fresh diaper before bed. (This is perhaps the only area where she is still, somewhat, a baby, as potty training has been spotty, at best. My fault, not hers.) At the beach, we formed many a crumbly staircase in the sand, watched our footprints dissolve into sea foam, ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut neatly into quarters, and basically lived the dream … Read More

Orange-Pecan Sticky Buns

Orange-Pecan Sticky Buns recipe (via thepigandquill.com) #baking #holiday #desserts #breakfast #pastry

We’re down to one nap. Have we talked about this yet? We’re down to one nap. And while it’s a helluva lot easier to schedule our days around a single snooze, it’s a doozy for my personal time. And my email inbox. And the taking of photographs during (diminishing) daylight hours. Oh, and also my sanity. See again: lack of personal time. Remember the days when Lana would snooze on my boob to the tune of a Pretty Little Liars marathon? I’m pretty sure I was still too busy fuh-reaking out about new parent shit at the time to fully appreciate the glory that was the nurse-nap, but man, that was a sweet deal. These days, I’m lucky if I can get the dishwasher loaded and a single episode queued up before the distinct dahhhhhhh-dah-dah-dah of a freshly woken babe trills from down the hall. Good thing she’s so gosh-daggin’ cute. Despite the shorty nap, Chris and I are rapidly learning how fun it can be to have an older kiddo on our hands. There’s the whole ballet thing we talked about last week, which, in its second week, is still charming as hell. There’s the way she picks up, inspects and … Read More

creamed spinach toasts with fried eggs + fennel

creamed spinach toasts with fried eggs + fennel (via thepigandquill.com)

Easter eggs. Can we call these that? Is that just too easy, too obvious, when I tell you that this brunchy feast is the exact thing you’ll want to dive your face into come Easter Sunday? Maybe so, but I never promised to be a clever one. And freaking Easter eggs — c’mon! It’s kinda cute. Cyuuuuuuute. Kyoooote. I’m getting soft. Ok, but before we talk about eggs real quick, can we just address THE JINX? Have you guys watched it? We were completely sucked in and polished off the whole mini-series in, like, three days. (I’m a liar. Two days.) And then went totally down the rabbit hole reading everything The New York Times has ever written on that squirrelly little muther. It’s only six eppies, you guys. Go watch it right now. And then watch Mad Men, because the first half of Season 7 is finally on Netflix and I ripped through that, too. I can’t tell if I’m liking Peggy or hating Peggy or liking Don or hating Don but I think I’m liking Don and still on the fence about Peggy and probably all men should look as dashing with silver hair as Roger Sterling. Thoughts thoughts thoughts?? It’s … Read More

fennel-spiced turkey + bacon breakfast sausage with crispy parmesan home fries

The perfect Christmas morning meal - and so easy! (And the sausage makes a tasty slider, too!) Full recipe at www.thepigandquill.com. #glutenfree #christmas #holiday #recipe #QSquaredNYC

In case you missed it, we’re having a babes. A babes! After years of wanting this, we’re excited, of course. But we — or maybe I should just say I — am also a little…lost with how to feel. And that, in itself, feels more than a little confusing. Chris is full of pure elation and joy and anticipation, his eyes literally alight in a way they’ve never been before as he imagines our new little life with this new little love and all the overwhelming emotion that will surely accompany the growth of our family. And while I have warm-fuzzies just seeing that look on his face, I’m still stuck somewhere between When Is This Going To Feel Real and No Seriously, All Those Nurturing Hormones I Read About Can Make An Appearance Any Day Now. Which kind of settles out into a place of quiet panic. I mean, I do already sense a bubbling up of love for this crazy, tiny, weirdo within, but at the same time, I’m harboring some guilt for not being one of those women who is completely and utterly natural at being pregnant. And it’s not that I’m nervous or scared that this baby won’t be everything we ever … Read More

two-potato latkes with smoky eggplant relish, spiced persimmon-apple sauce + sour cream

Perfect for entertaining! Crisp potato pancakes with two simple toppings that make great recipes on their own, too. Sweet, spicy, smoky, creamy! Full recipes at www.thepigandquill.com // #holiday #hanukkah #recipe #glutenfree #vegetarian

My mom has always said that we, the Chinese people, have an unspoken kinship with Jewish folks — insofar as “where Jewish people have guilt, Chinese people have shame.” That, and we both love to eat. Thirty seconds ago, I shared this theory with my Jewish friend, Randi (we’re sitting on her sofa, re-watching the latest episode of Parenthood — because apparently we gluttons for punishment also share a passion for fug-faced sobbing) and she laughed. And then she agreed. And then she offered me a popsicle. So, there ya go, Momma. #nailedit And with that, I give you: Chinese-approved Hanukkah foods. Hellooooooooooo latkes! Remember that little discussion we had about how much I (read: the pigletus) am loving potatoes these days? I mean, yeah, the duck fat in that last recipe might have had something to do with it — because I would, quite frankly, eat a crate of packing peanuts a la lard d’mallard — but dem spuds be hollerin’ at me something fierce. (I’m sorry, I don’t know what’s happening to my vocabulary.) So instead of putting one potato in these classically prepared tater cakes, I put two. One potato, two potato… That’s all the potatoes. But yay, right? Two-potato latkes. Because the alternative was … Read More

Creamy Eggs with Garlicky Greens, Avocado & Chili Oil

You’re so lucky, guys. I’ve got a snap-ton of snazzy stuff headed your way in the weeks to come, like more infused, fruity drinks (since you were kinda bananas for the last one), a pair of pretty, spring soups that will make quick work of all those CSA veggies, and even a CAKE. Yeah, cake stuffs happened and I lived to tell about it. And I totally didn’t drop my favorite ceramic measuring spoon down the running garbage disposal in the process. (No really, I didn’t. But that’s a very real fear of mine. Like, I imagine it happening nearly every time the two — the running disposal and the spoon, that is — get within 10 inches of each other. I guess it’s really the spoon that gets all up nears the disposal, since the latter is kind of in a fixed position, but please believe me when I say that I literally imagine this poor spoon’s inopportune death all. the. time. It’s kind of sick. Send help now. And tell them to bring along some metal measuring spoons so I can put this fear to rest for once and for all. KTHX.) Wow, maybe I should have saved that for the actual … Read More

Cheesy Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes w/ Crispy Chorizo & Maple Cream (gluten-free, veggie variation)

First, big thanks to everyone who entered last week’s giveaway of “The Paleo Foodie”! I was happily blown away by your collective passion for leading (or learning more about) a paleo lifestyle. Any diet that gives lamb chops and butter a fatty thumbs up is A-OK with me. (Confession: I might be a little emoji dependent. I might be a little sad I can’t pictorally A-OK this biznit. *Emoji tearface*) And, bigger congrats to our randomly selected winner, Heidi K. I know you’ll love checking out Arsy’s arsynal — nyuck nyuck— of nummers paleo recipes. 🙂 So let’s quickly talk ‘taters. Should we call them Easter ‘taters? Why not. We called these dudes Christmas Eggs and nobody gave a tiddlywink. Also, there’s a good chance I’ll be putting plenty of these ‘taters in my face this weekend, so it’s totally appropriate. These are some of the tastiest sweet potatoes I’ve ever eaten ever. And you might have noticed I eat kind of a lot of sweet potatoes. They’re so damn versatile, I put them in chili and waffles and gnocchi and burgers — but this is more of a spotlight situation. They’re sweet potatoes disguised as nothing more than themselves. Well, maybe a nip-tucked version of … Read More

Hooky, housekeeping…and a haiku

Full disclosure here. I just wanted three “H” things. Super misleading. (Or was it?) I took this past week off to play hooky. Mountains on Monday, touring around the city on Tuesday, and then three fuhnomenal days cruising the Central Coast, which I’m fairly certain is one of the most beautiful places on God’s green earth. Literally — green earth. For you East Coasters, that might be NBD, but here in drought-ridden California, a little rolling-green-hills action makes my insides feel like gummy bears dancing around in tiny party sombreros holding tiny drinks with even tinier drink umbrellas. In their skivvies. With the latest Netflix release of Mad Men looping in the background. It was the best kind of therapy imaginable. Not that I needed therapy. (I totally needed therapy.) Brunching at home. In the sunshine. With no agenda. City brunching. Bishop’s Peak, San Luis Obispo Doesn’t this picture look really small and stupid here? BE MORE EPIC, PHOTO. Yeah, I don’t do yoga. Oh look, you can see me in the parm. And the pepper flakes. And the sunglasses. And the pepperoni grease. Hearsty Hearst Hearst. Sorry. Yep, you. #yolkporn #localeverything (‘cept the ‘nanas) #wineforbreakie Too many ‘choke puns. System overloading. Photo montage attack!!!! … Read More

Classic Açaí Bowls (vegan & gluten-free)

Açaí bowls. So hot right now. If you live in a beach town or some kefir-drinking granola ‘hood, you know what I mean. Or maybe if you’re, like, Brazilian, or something. In which case, please tell me: why are roughly ALL% of the world’s supermodels Brazilian? Are the Brazilian people really all that statuesque and sultry and smoldering and other S words that make me want to do a jillion sit-ups and then smear myself in tropical oils? Do YOU look like that? You do, don’t you — little stinker. I guess you can stick around. So açaí bowls. Super hot. If you’re none of the above — I mean, maybe you’re statuesque but you’re a Nordic Ice Queen, or something, I don’t know, I recently watched Frozen and it’s ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT SO SORRY. If you’re not super familiar with the whole açaí bowl thing, here’s the gist. It’s Brazilian. I do like ranting about Brazilians, but that was actually my point earlier. It’s brilliant. It’s a smoothie parfait that feels one hundred thousand times healthier than it sounds. It’s Brazilliant. Oh, you saw that coming? Love you. For realsies, though, it’s a blend of frozen, super antioxidant-rich açaí berry puree … Read More
